Hello World

Hello, I am Red_Ink_Cat, or Red for short. I wish I could tell you my actual name, but then I would have to kill you – or the men in sunglasses riding around in those neat black vans would.

Hello, War Dolls Blog Readers!

Hey ladies, and possibly gents!  I’m new to this blog and wanted to take a quick minute to introduce myself.  The name is Amber and I’ll be writing about board games!  Mostly reviews, but there may be other little tidbits I throw in here and there.  So, a little about me…

I just turned 32 (literally JUST…as in today!).  I live in Marietta with my awesome boyfriend and no kids or pets, which makes life pretty easy.  I’ve always enjoyed board games, but it only recently became a big hobby, causing me to start my own Meetup for girls to get together and play games together (as it tends to be a male dominated activity in my experience).

I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer and most things Joss Whedon, Halloween, Star Trek: TNG, Star Wars, stabby video games, space, aliens, vampires, zombies, Batman, half finished craft projects (although I’d probably LOVE completed ones more), Dexter, Chuck, Freddy Krueger, dinosaurs, robots, sharks, and completely ridiculous things.

All that being said, I should have my first game review up in the next few days (it’s been a busy week and on top of my birthday and my mom’s, the boy and I have been house shopping).  I hope you’ll stop by and check it out because the game I’m reviewing is awesome, ridiculous, and actually SUPER simple.  It’s a fantastic starter game, that would be great for small parties, and anyone that has a sense of humor.

Queen of the Nerds

So, I don’t know how many people followed that reality show on TBS, King of the Nerds – hilarious, btw, if you can watch it you should – but if you’re unfamiliar with it, here’s the premise: 11 nerds locked together in a house called “Nerdvana” compete to prove which of them is the biggest nerd and has earned the right to sit atop the Throne of Games.

Pretty standard reality series, right?

But here’s the oddity. As the game progressed, one by one, the male nerds were eliminated, but the females were untouched. In fact, of the final five, four were female. And the final three? All women. So, yeah, the first King of the Nerds, at least according to reality TV, was a queen.

And that’s pretty cool! How empowering for little nerdy females to watch these strong women compete and win, to watch these women embrace their nerdiness and win the cash prize! To see them take down the men one after the other and remain standing as the strongest of nerd-kind!

The problem is, though, that these women weren’t left in the finale because they fought and triumphed. They were left in the finale because they were by and large ignored by the men. Over and over again the nerds had to nominate people to go to the elimination rounds (“nerd-offs”) and of course, the nerds voted in the people they perceived to be the biggest threat. At those perceived big threats? All male. Only one of the women was given a second glance, and when the dust settled at the end of it, the last nerd standing was a woman who had basically flown under the radar the entire time. She’d never been to a nerd-off, never dominated a challenge, never made herself out to be a threat and since she didn’t step up to the plate and show herself as important, all those guys automatically assumed they didn’t have to worry about her.

What does it say about the nerdy gamer culture that these things still happen? Should I expect my male opponents in 40k to go easy on me because I’m female? Should I expect my guildies in WoW to forgive lower healing numbers and carry me through heroics because I have a higher-pitched voice on vent? Should I step aside and let the guys stutter and stumble their way through teaching a newbie how to roll a character in D&D, even though I’m a ten-year veteran player and (gasp) actually a teacher?

Personally, my answer is no to all of those things. I’m kind of naturally shy, but when someone says (or implies) that I’m not as good as they are for any reason, it raises my hackles, if you will. My numbers in WoW stand up to any other healer or DPS. My 40k list can win games without being slapped with the cheese-label (and it’s characterful and themey, too!). And when someone’s struggling with a character sheet, I can’t help but jump in.

I hope that things like this blog, seeing Beth walk around the game store in six-inch platforms, and Cami running – not just participating in –  the current 40k campaign, will do things to make the males of the nerd-world see us more as equals, as viable opponents instead of eye candy. But, until then, does anyone know when the next King of the Nerd auditions are? I could use a hundred thousand dollars…

As of late

So as of late, my ass has been busy holding a job ( no, not in the kitchen guys and im not going back to it) so my geek streek has been pushed back to things that i can only do at home.. least till i am done with training at work and start on my true scedual. So i canceled my account for the time, recently i added more time to the account, Since i have had to now work at catching up to the boys who spend their lives in moma's basement peeing in bottles and yelling at mom when they need more food. With only a few hours on wow at night between being a mom and needing sleep for my job its been kinda.. busy.. anywho i have managed to get my lvl 80 hunter to 83 and my shammy started at lvl 65 when this all started and was 85 and gearing up with in a week. let me tell you, Cata is just a copy and paste with a little paint to make to look diffrent of other wow expantions. oh, and higher lvl. I will say it is EPIC to ride my flying mount in SW and watch everyone run around trying to find me when i am posting my enchainting book in trade and someone wants one, lol. Anywho. Another thing that i have been geeking out about is Legends of Krynn mud, I wish it was more active, but sadly... *frown* not many have been on as of late, so yeah. it kinda suck! And the other thing i have been geeking abotu is the two new MTG sets that came out recently new pharixia and m12, i am trying to find the new angels without looking them up on line.. you know its harder then one would thing, lol. Well, I should ger going and head the fuck out so i can take a nap before work, NI NI!

Along Came a Spider

Just thought I would come and and introduce myself, I am Emerald Rose Widow, or you can call me Rachel as well if you like.  Was brought into this little endeavor by Hurricanegirl who I met online through my friend Jenn sometime earlier this year.  She has introduced me to many awesome things in wargaming and has become somewhat of a mentor for me.  So I am glad to be brought in and a part of something with her like this.

I am a gamer, plain and simple, though these days I focus more on the tabletop.  DND (mostly play pathfinder though), Warhammer, Magic the Gathering, I am a general gaming nerd to be completely honest, and carry my dice around in my purse.  I am a total dork and loving it, though my experience in Warhammer and the like is rather new, as I only started playing in January, but so far am loving it.  I have my own gaming blog to talk about my own armies, but will also be contributing to hear all my experience that I may have, neat ideas, and funny stories and the like.  I just want to have fun, get to know, and just hang out with my fellow girl gamers, and I am glad to be here.

So here I shall be and I hope to get to know you all and be great friends, cause girl gamer friends are teh awesome.
